ORAL MEDICINE is a distinctive science which bridges Dentistry and Medicine.
Our mission is integrated with that of our institution, MRADC and our university, RGUHS.
We are committed to imparting knowledge as well as to motivating student learning, providing good patient care and to serving the community.
Educational programmes conducted are designed to accentuate cognitive skills in decision making, critical thinking, problem solving, research and need for lifelong learning.
Oral Medicine is that area of special competence in Dentistry concerned with diseases that involve the oral and para-oral structures, especially the oral manifestations of systemic diseases, behavioral disorders and the oral and dental treatment of medically compromised patients.
The Department also runs an Orofacial Pain Clinic and a Forensic Dentistry Research Center.
All students are encouraged to present research papers and posters at National and International
conferences.
TEACHING PROGRAMMES: –
Undergraduate teaching programme:
The Undergraduate students are trained through lectures, demonstrations, clinical case discussions, seminars, and tutorials with emphasis on problem-based learning. The students are evaluated periodically by conducting theory, viva voce and clinical examinations.
Post graduate teaching programme:–
The MDS course was started in the Department of OMR in 1992-1993. 53 Postgraduate students have since completed the course successfully. Postgraduate students are trained meticulously through case discussions, journal reviews, seminars and inter department meetings. Interesting
cases are recorded, and short- term research projects are undertaken, apart from dissertation and library dissertation.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the branch of Dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of disorders affecting the facial complex and the skeleton, including the jaws and the oral cavity. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is committed to providing an innovative educational program, transmitting scientific knowledge through study & discovery and enhancing the clinical skills of the students & staff. The departmental goal is to provide the undergraduate and postgraduate students with a strong educational foundation in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for their future career in Dentistry and to prepare the student for a life-long learning process.
Contemporary training in both Medicine and Dentistry enables Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons to treat conditions requiring expertise in both fields. These include a range of common oral surgical procedures (e.g. impacted teeth, dental implants), jaw and congenital facial disproportion, facial trauma, oral cancer, salivary gland disease, temporomandibular joint disorder and various benign pathologies (e.g. cysts and tumors of the jaws).Patients are referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by both general and specialist dental and medical practitioners. In many instances, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons work in collaboration with other specialists such as Orthodontists, ENT Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and Oncologists as part of multidisciplinary teams to optimize the treatment of major conditions and diseases of the mouth,
face and jaws.
The training also involves rotational peripheral postings for post-graduate students at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Medical College in the departments of General Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, ENT and Ophthalmology for a period of 1 month each, respectively. As part of peripheral postings, postgraduate students are also posted at NIMHANS, Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain Hospital (for training in cleft management) and at Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, Kerala (for clinical experience in Oncology).

Undergraduate teaching programme:
Started in the year 1987 with the B.D.S. program, the extensive undergraduate program includes training of the students in case history taking, pillow suturing and fixation of arch bars on models along with thorough clinical training in extractions. Regular discussions and demonstrations are carried out under the guidance of assigned mentors.
Post graduate teaching programme:
Started in the year 1992, department has been offering the MDS program over the past 27 years. The department admits 5 students each year into the post-graduate program.
The Department of Pediatric Dentistry is a special branch of dentistry that provides both primary and comprehensive oral health care for infants and children from birth to 14 years including those with special health care needs. It was established in the year of 1997 and is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi
University of Health Sciences. We provide complete treatment of primary and permanent teeth in the department as well as the management of harmful oral habits, full mouth rehabilitation, procedures under general anesthesia and chair side conscious sedation for the dental care of children and also to children with special health care needs.

● Pedodontics and Preventive dentistry (III and IV BDS). A mentorship system is followed at the undergraduate level.
Post graduate teaching programme: –
● The postgraduate course (Master of dental surgery) was started in the year 2010 with a current admission of 3 seats per year.
PhD programme: –
● The PhD programme was started in 2018 under RGUH .
Periodontics is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the diseases of the supporting tissues of teeth and prevention of their occurrence. It also deals with the management of aesthetic problems caused by the loss of periodontal structures and aims at restoration of the lost structures.As the success of a dental treatment plan is heavily dependent on the health of the periodontium, an extensive understanding of the progression of periodontal diseases gives Periodontistsan edge while predicting the prognosis of affected teeth. Hence, the role of a Periodontist is indispensable to a dental practice.
Department comprises of experienced doctors with a vast plethora of experience with specialists in the field of periodontal immunology, genetics, periodontal plastic surgery, Implantology and laser dentistry.

Undergraduate teaching programme:
Undergraduates are trained over two years (through the 3 rd and 4 th years of their BDS degrees) with basic pre-clinical work and concurrently trained clinically by providing case scenarios with an individualised mentor for every student.
Post graduate teaching programme: –
The post-graduate course in the Department of Periodontology was started in the year 1992-93, with the current intake being 6 per year.
The Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics can be divided into 4 sections, based on the type of treatment done:
– Conservative dentistry deals with the study, diagnosis and integrated management of diseases of teeth.
– Endodontics deals with diseases and injuries of enamel, dentine and the dental pulp (involves root canal treatment and post and core treatment whenever required).
– Esthetic dentistry is a branch of Conservative dentistry which deals with the correction of dental anomalies like spacing between teeth, malformed teeth (smile designing) and discoloration of teeth (bleaching) which leads to enhanced self-confidence of the patient and improved social confidence, as well.
– Micro-dentistry is the most advanced branch of Conservative dentistry and Endodontics which involves the use of a microscope to study the intricate structures of teeth. This helps to improve diagnosis and treatment planning, leading to successful outcome of treatment procedures.

The post-graduate course in the Department of Conservative dentistry and Endodontics was started in the year 2000-01. PG intake being 5 candidates per year and PG Diploma candidates being 2 per year.
The department of public health dentistry aims to provide preventive, promotive, and curative services to improve the oral health of the population, especially for the needy population. In order to achieve this goal, the department is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure in terms of teaching, learning, and practice of dental public health. The department has well-experienced faculty members who are at par with national and international standards to train both graduate and post-graduate students. The satellite centres and mobile dental unit are the core part of the departmental infrastructure which facilitates the outreach programs and real-life experience of dealing with patients. Additionally, the department has a tobacco cessation center and also collaborated with government and non-government programs like Dantha-bhagya, Employee State Insurance Scheme (ESI) and so on which helps students to learn team-building, problem- solving, and decision-making skills. The faculty are involved in research and have published papers in national and international journals. Overall, the department is a dream destination for students to equip themselves with knowledge and skill in public health dentistry.

The Department of Prosthodontics, Crown and Bridge and Implantology, is designed to impart advanced knowledge, critical, analytical, innovative and
problem-solving skills and expertise in clinical treatment and research.
VISION– To conduct high quality dental education programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. To help foster acquisition of knowledge in clinical science and research. Also to provide comprehensive and specialised oral healthcare for all socio-economic groups.
MISSION-To recognise the importance of oral health care services, research and innovative educational programmes of the highest degree.
Members of the faculty are well-trained in research and have presented their research findings at various forums. The faculty is also committed to scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. Student training is done in two stages i.e., pre- clinical and clinical prosthodontics at both undergraduate and post-graduate level. The department has an advanced implant clinic, geriatric clinic and is also equipped with a highly sophisticated ceramic and casting lab.
The department is blessed with excellent outpatient flow. This provides the students and faculty with remarkable clinical exposure creating an ideal platform for learning. Specialized procedures include placing implants and related procedures and fabrication of maxillofacial prostheses. Free camps are also conducted at regular intervals.
