About The Department/ Introduction

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the branch of Dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of disorders affecting the facial complex and the skeleton, including the jaws and the oral cavity. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is committed to providing an innovative educational program, transmitting scientific knowledge through study & discovery and enhancing the clinical skills of the students & staff. The departmental goal is to provide the undergraduate and postgraduate students with a strong educational foundation in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for their future career in Dentistry and to prepare the student for a life-long learning process.

Contemporary training in both Medicine and Dentistry enables Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons to treat conditions requiring expertise in both fields. These include a range of common oral surgical procedures (e.g.impacted teeth, dental implants), jaw and congenital facial disproportion, facial trauma, oral cancer, salivary gland disease, temporomandibular joint disorder and various benign pathologies (e.g. cysts and tumors of the jaws).Patients are referred to the Department ofOral and Maxillofacial Surgery by both general and specialist dental and medical practitioners. In many instances, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons work in collaboration with other specialists such as Orthodontists, ENT Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and Oncologists as part of multidisciplinary teams to optimize the treatment of major conditions and diseases of the mouth, face and jaws.

The training also involves rotational peripheral postings for post-graduate students at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Medical College in the departments of General Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, ENT and Ophthalmology for a period of 1 month each, respectively. As part of peripheral postings, postgraduate students are also posted at NIMHANS, Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain Hospital (for training in cleft management) and at Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, Kerala (for clinical experience in Oncology)
