About The Department/ Introduction
Oral Medicine
Oral Medicine is a distinctive science which bridges Dentistry and Medicine. Our mission is integrated with that of our institution, MRADC and our university, RGUHS. We are committed to imparting knowledge as well as to motivating student learning, providing good patient care and to serving the community.
Educational programmes conducted are designed to accentuate cognitive skills in decision making, critical thinking, problem solving, research and need for lifelong learning.
Oral Medicine is that area of special competence in Dentistry concerned with diseases that involve the oral and para-oral structures, especially the oral manifestations of systemic diseases, behavioural disorders and the oral and dental treatment of medically compromised patients.
The Department also runs an Orofacial Pain and TMJ Clinic.
All students are encouraged to present research papers and posters at National and International conferences.
TEACHING PROGRAMMES :
Undergraduate teaching programme:
The Undergraduate students are trained through lectures, demonstrations, clinical case discussions, seminars, and tutorials with emphasis on problem-based learning. The students are evaluated periodically by conducting theory, viva voce and clinical examinations.
Post graduate teaching programme:
The MDS course was started in the Department of OMR in 1992-1993. More than 55 Postgraduate students have since completed the course successfully. Postgraduate students are trained meticulously through case discussions, journal reviews, seminars and inter department meetings. Interesting cases are recorded, and short- term research projects are undertaken, apart from dissertation and library dissertation.

Treatment / services offered
- Diagnosis of all dental and orofacial diseases.
- Diagnosis of potentially malignant disorders.
- Diagnosis of early oral cancer.
- Chairside investigations for oral cancer.
- Dental management of medically compromised patients.
- Diagnosis of complex orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders,
occlusal radiographs, digital RVG and conventional and digital extra oral radiographs.
