Periodontics

Introduction

The Department of Periodontology plays a crucial role in managing diseases affecting the supporting structures of teeth, including both Periodontal and Peri-implant conditions. This speciality not only focuses on the prevention and treatment of these diseases but also addresses Aesthetic concerns arising from tissue loss. A solid understanding of these diseases is essential, as successful dental treatments depend heavily on the health of the Periodontium. Periodontists are indispensable for achieving favourable outcomes in Dental Implant procedures and overall dental health.
Established in 1987 alongside the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program, the department further expanded with the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) program in 1992, providing advanced training for over 27 years. Currently, the department admits six Postgraduate students annually. The clinical training curriculum is comprehensive, covering both Non-surgical and Surgical periodontal therapies, with a strong emphasis on Regenerative procedures, Periodontal Plastic surgeries, Dental Implants, management of Peri-Implant diseases, Ridge and Sinus Augmentation procedures, Laser-assisted periodontal surgery, and Piezo surgical procedures.
Furthermore, the department promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, offering programs that explore Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics, Endodontic-Periodontic interactions, and Periodontal-Prosthodontic Interrelationships. To ensure continuous professional development, the department organizes ongoing continuing education programs. The highly qualified team comprises experienced Professors, Readers, and Senior Lecturers, led by a Head with extensive teaching and research experience. Faculty members possess specialized expertise in Periodontal Immunology, Genetics, Periodontal Plastic surgery, Implantology, Laser dentistry, and Piezo-surgical procedures. This dedication to education, research, and clinical practice positions the Department of Periodontology as a leader in preparing skilled Periodontists to provide the highest standard of patient care.
