Introduction

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the nature, diagnosis, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. The department is actively involved in diagnostic services, primarily supporting MRADCH, while also serving as a referral center that reviews slides and blocks from various other institutions. Additionally, the department features an Immunohistochemistry section, enhancing its capabilities for advanced diagnostic processes.

The department focuses on providing comprehensive education in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, equipping students with practical experience in subjects like pathology and clinical management of head and neck disorders. It also emphasizes laboratory management, teaching, and research skills to foster career development in this challenging field. In addition to its teaching responsibilities, the department is involved in diverse research activities and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to support these endeavors.

History of BDS and MDS curriculum

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Microbiology at M. R. Ambedkar Dental College & Hospital, Bangalore, was established in 1986-87, with the post-graduate program starting in 2011-12. Oral pathology was initially introduced as part of the basic sciences in the BDS curriculum, focusing on foundational knowledge. Over time, the MDS curriculum evolved to include oral pathology as a core subject, incorporating advanced diagnostic techniques and research. This shift highlights the growing importance of pathology in dental practice, enhancing clinical decision-making and patient care.

CDE programme was conducted on CANCER DIAGNOSIS- EARLY DETECTION TO SAVE LIVES on 7th Feb 2024 in view of WORLD ORAL CANCER DAY

GUEST SPEAKERS

A CDE program on “Cancer Diagnosis – Early Detection to Save Lives” was conducted on February 7, 2024, in observance of World Oral Cancer Day. The event featured guest speakers Dr. Pradeep Kumar K.N., Consultant Radiation Oncologist, Apollo Hospital, Bangalore, and Dr. Hemavathi Srinivasan, Director and Consultant, Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Motherhood Apollo Hospital, Bangalore. They provided insight into recent advances in cancer detection, light-based diagnostic systems in oral cancer, and emphasized the importance of self-examination for the early detection of breast and cervical cancer.

CDE programme was conducted on "Cells and Signals: Bridging Inflammation and Diagnosis in Oral Pathology" on occasion of National Oral Pathology Day 2025 on February 25th.

GUEST SPEAKERS

A CDE program on “Cells and Signals: Bridging Inflammation and Diagnosis in Oral Pathology” was conducted, featuring guest speakers Dr. Sreelakshmi and Dr. Ramya B.S., Professors, Department of General Pathology, BMCRI. They shared insights on the role of inflammation in dental practice and the significance of exfoliative cytology as a diagnostic tool, highlighting its potential to enhance patient care, improve early pathology detection, and ensure timely intervention. The celebrations also involved organizing interactive competitive events for the undergraduates and interns such as Debate , H and E rangoli competition as well as Reels related to the subject proper.

About Oral Maxillofacial pathology & Microbiology

  • Microscopic Diagnosis Service– Apart from routine H&E for biopsies and large specimens, department also provides following special services:
  1. Cytology – Oral Smears.
  2. Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology.
  3. Histochemistry – Hematoxylin and Eosin , Periodic Acid Schiff, Papanicolaou stain, Ziehl-Nielsen, Congo Red, Verhoeff’s stain, Van Gieson stain, Alcian Blue, Reticulin stain etc.
  4. Immunohistochemistry.
  5. Immunoflurosence.
  6. Second opinion on slides / paraffin blocks.
  • Clinical pathology – The Department engages in active screening and diagnosis of patients with oral-mucosal pathologies, development anomalies, odontogenic pathologies, potentially malignant disorders and malignant conditions.
  • Clinical laboratory – The laboratory section is well equipped with highend investigation equipments to facilitate patients for following investigations: CBC- Automated, Peripheral blood smears , Coagulation studies , Blood Grouping & RH factor, Blood Urea, Serum Creatinine, FBS, PPBS, RBS, GRBS, HIV 1 & 2, HbsAg,  ESR, and PRF.
